150 YEARS

LOVED BY GOD,

LOVING OUR NEIGHBOR

An announcement, some encouragement, and a plan.

Friends, in light of governor Kelly’s recommendations and the actions of many other local churches, our church council has decided that we will discontinue our Sunday morning services for a few weeks.  “Few” isn’t very specific, is it?  Sorry about that.  Our plan is to actively monitor our situation as we go forward and make decisions based on future developments.  Just know that when we feel it is both wise and safe to return to gathering on Sunday mornings, we will let you know.

For all of us, this decision will be a downer, and for good reason.  We love being together and worshipping together.  It certainly wasn’t a decision that was made lightly. But just as any of us would care for our immediate family by taking precautions to keep them safe, we feel that we must care for our church family in the same way.  If you have any questions at all about our decision, or are interested in how we arrived there, we’d love to talk with you about it.  Just give me a call or shoot me an email (Pastor Blaine 785-608-6819, blaine.scctopeka@gmail.com).

Now let’s be encouraged.  Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”  John 14:27

Friends, let’s not be alarmed that the world seems to be in chaos, because after all, that’s what a fallen world does best.  Remember that peace is every bit as contagious as fear, and that’s why we are here: to be carriers of peace.  Jesus has given us his peace.   He doesn’t give it out like the world does – here one minute, gone the next.  The peace Jesus gives is unaffected by circumstance, unassailable by bad news.  So our Savior says, “it’s ok, don’t be afraid, not at all.”

For the believer, all is well, even if everything around is not. Don’t think for a minute that somehow we’re out of God’s plan or his work has been disrupted.  If we believe that God is sovereignly in control of all things, then we have great assurance that even in these strange times, he has an important work for us to do.  So let’s open our eyes and look for it; let’s be expectant!  Let’s smile with each new day and with uplifted hearts remember the Gospel that saves us.  God is setting us up for something good! Opportunities abound to show the love and care of Christ, and even though we aren’t meeting in the church, that does not mean that we cease to be the Church.

I hope that encourages you.  Now here’s our plan, because you might be wondering, “what are we going to do for the next few weeks?”  We have three main goals, or areas of focus, that will keep SCC on the move: Scripture, Serving, and Support.

The foundation of our Sunday morning gathering is the Word of God, and so we will continue to provide a weekly message for you.  This message will be available in video, audio, and print formats to make sure that everyone has access to it and can be strengthened by it.  Videos will livestream on Facebook each Sunday and can be viewed later as well.  Audio will be posted on Monday not only at www.scctopeka.com, but also linked from our Facebook page.  Transcripts will be mailed to anyone who finds that format to be most suitable.

Another way the Spirit works in our lives, aside from the preaching of the Word, is in our relationships.  We don’t want to neglect that during this time.  So in order to keep us linked together and loving one another, we will be calling on certain members to take responsibility for serving small groups within the church while we’re unable to meet.  These folks will shepherd and care for the flock through phone calls, conversation, prayer, and other avenues of encouragement.  Stay tuned for more details on that.

Finally, as we all know, giving is an important part of our Sunday morning gathering.  The Church doesn’t sell or market a product; it operates on the generosity of her people.  With that in mind, we want to encourage you to continue in your joyful giving to SCC!  So even though we won’t be meeting, you can drop your weekly offering off at the church (we’ll still be here working), put it in the mail, or simply use the Tithe.ly app on your phone.  If you haven’t used that app yet, it’s super easy and convenient.  We can help you figure it out if you’d like!

So there you have it! Scripture, Service, and Support.  Because God is at work among us, Seaman Community Church will continue to move forward, grow, and be a Gospel light to our neighborhood.

Friends, if you have any questions or concerns in the coming days, don’t hesitate – contact me and let me know how we can help you!
