In today's passage Jesus goes before Pilate and receives his sentence from the State. We see sinful humanity on full display: religious and secular powers conspiring together to put God out of their sight. But this is how it had to be if Christ was going to die "for sins, once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring us to God" (1 Peter 3:8).
